Frequently Asked Questions

A psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner is an advanced practice nurse who has obtained additional education and training. This additional education and training enables the nurse practitioner to perform psychiatric assessment, to diagnose psychiatric conditions, to provide therapy, and to prescribe medications to treat a wide array of diagnoses.

My journey as a nurse practitioner involved first obtaining my bachelor's of science in nursing (BSN) from the University of Pittsburgh. Following several years working as a nurse, I went back to school at Carlow University in Pittsburgh and obtained a Master's of Science in Nursing to become a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2015. After working in primary care for many years and managing psychiatric diagnoses there, I decided to return to school in 2020 at the University of Cincinnati to pursue dual certification to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner as well.
